Dance Styles

Ballet

Explore grace and strength with this classical form of dance. In our adult ballet class, we focus on coordination and basic movements, while also building strength, balance and flexibility. This class is geared towards beginners and everyone is welcome.

Zumba

This is a fitness class disguised as a party! Zumba is a fitness program that combines Latin and international music with dance. The program routines incorporate interval training — alternating fast and slow rhythms — to help improve cardiovascular fitness. Anissia is a Licensed ZIN since 2018. Her energy is contagious!

TAP

Feel the rhythm down to your toes. Our adult tap classes teach the foundations of musicality and explore basic tap techniques and combinations. All you need is a pair of tap shoes and you’re set to enjoy this expressive style of dance. This class is open to all levels.

Hip Hop

This energetic form of dancing is influenced by styles from the 1960’s and 1970’s. A favourite dance style for many beginners, hip hop allows you freedom of movement and is an expressive dance experience!

Frequently Asked Questions

Who can join a CGDA adult class?
Anyone! We welcome all adult dancers, whether they have a dance background or not. Our adult classes are geared for beginners, but dancers with previous experience in earlier years are welcome to attend as well.

Do I need to register in advance online or can I just come in? You can absolutely drop-in, but we do recommend logging into your account on the CGDA website and signing up to guarantee your spot for that week’s class. You will need an account with CGDA in order to participate in our classes.
Do I need to be in good shape already? All bodies were made to dance! In fact, dance is a wonderful way to get fit and have fun. Our classes are geared for beginner-level dancers, so you don’t need to worry about being a pro.
What should I wear? Something you can move in comfortably and confidently! Well-fitting leggings, tank-tops, t-shirts, and fitness styles are great choices. We do recommend investing in dance footwear if possible (eg. ballet shoes, tap shoes). This is because it can be difficult to execute the dance steps properly without the right grip or well-fitting footwear.

Common Ground - Elisabet White

Elisabet White, RAD RTS

Owner & Artistic Director

Elisabet has been teaching dance for over 10 years and dancing for more than 25 years. Born and raised in Ottawa, Elisabet danced locally where she successfully completed her RAD Advanced 2 Ballet and ADAPT Advanced Jazz examinations while attending Canterbury High School - Performing Arts – Dance program. In 2012 Elisabet went on to attend the prestigious Ailey School Professional Division, NYC where she received a Certificate of Dance with Honours. After graduating she pursued a certificate in Ballet Teaching Studies through the Royal Academy of Dance (RAD). She has also trained at Alonzo King LINES, San Francisco, and the Royal Winnipeg Ballet, Summer Professional Programs. During her dance training she had the opportunity to work with renowned choreographers such as: Alonzo King, Sidra Bell, Matthew Rushing, Darrell Moultrie, Amy Hall, Ray Mercer, and Carlos Dos Santos.

While studying dance at The Ailey School, Elisabet had the privilege of teaching children in The Ailey School First Steps Program, and travel to Florida as a guest teacher. These opportunities ignited her passion for teaching dance. After graduating from The Ailey School, she went on to expand her teaching skills in Halifax, NS and the surrounding area, teaching various methods of ballet, and jazz styles of dance, to children and adults, and choreograph for national competitions and local performances. While in Halifax she also volunteered at local schools to engage students in dance activities.

Over the years, Elisabet has had the opportunity to perform in the Tri-State area of New York, Canada and Mexico.

Elisabet has now returned home to Ottawa and in pursuing her passion for dance and vision to explore dance with children, she opened the doors to Common Ground Dance Academy in 2020.

Her passion for teaching children the art of dance is evident in her guidance and support for her students.

As Elisabet continues to pursue her passion for dance and to teach the art of dance, she now sees her vision to offer her love for dance to children of all ages and opened the doors to Common Ground Dance Academy to pass on her passion to the community.

“No matter where you come from or who you are, when we’re in the studio, we’re all on common ground” is the founding vision of Common Ground Dance Academy.
